Welcome to Kingfisher Class!
We are a mixed Year 5 and Year 6 class, our teacher is Miss Medcalf and our Teaching Assistant is Miss Jones.
Community is at the heart of our classroom practice; our children have high aspirations and understand the value of making positive contributions to the world around them. Our goal is to ensure that all of our children are happy and engaged.

Classroom
Our classroom is well-organised, inviting and is at the heart of an inclusive learning environment. The children in Kingfisher Class progress throughout the year and become more independent as their time in year 5 progresses to prepare them for Year 6 and for their SATS. We care deeply about children’s mental health and therefore we instil a positive growth mindset for all our children. In Year 6, each child has the opportunity to become an ambassador, which helps to them to learn about responsibility and to gain leadership skills. Our Year 6 pupils have the important responsibility of contributing towards the smooth running of our school; we really value their efforts and mature attitude towards this. We also promote the importance of teamwork, which is evident within our classroom.
P.E
In Kingfisher Class, PE is on a Wednesday and Friday afternoons, and during the Spring term the children attend swimming lessons at Carne Brea on a Tuesday afternoon. PE kits are to be kept in school from the start of each term, and swimming kits are brought into school weekly. The children will also be taught a wide range of dance techniques and dance styles throughout their PE lessons. This will link to class topics and the current situations around the world.
Homework
Weekly homework assignments are to be completed at home. These are posted on Google Classroom and are given to the children in their homework book on a Friday. Completed homework needs to be handed in by the following Thursday.

Reading
Reading is a crucial part of learning and should be enjoyed daily- every child is expected to read and discuss their text for at least 15-20 minutes, either independently or to an adult. They should then write how much they have read in their reading record, which should be initialled daily by an adult at home. The children are familiar with our VIPERS reading scheme, and all children have a copy of this in the back of their reading record in order for you to encourage them to answer a selection of questions after they have read. VIPERS highlights the 6 key areas of the reading domain, and are there to help prompt your children so that they can improve their comprehension of texts.
